This collaboration of Secretariat and Delano came together to create a hypothetical restaurant branding titled “Newsies Burger & Bar”. Drawing a connection between the history of these two resurrected typefaces, Secretariat and Delano came from the same period of the early 20th century. Grace Cooper, my partner in this project and the creator of Delano, and I began ideating ways we could include our historical typefaces in a contemporary setting.
We found an existing building in Buffalo, NY, located in a historical downtown district. This building housed a dark, moody interior as well as a unique exterior. This was perfect for our concept and overarching goals. A newspaper stand or newspaper boy were the main inspirations for this restaurant.
For the branding of this burger and bar restaurant, we wanted a dark, rustic feel, yet an inviting atmosphere. Overall, this should be a gathering place for socializing and connection, which was one of the main things we found to be important to people in the 1920s. We desired to have ephemera and general touchpoints of the burger and bar to be inspired by the old-timey feel with a contemporary twist.
